Academic Success
Through tutoring and homework help, access to technology, college and career readiness programs, and skill development, Clubs have an outstanding record of helping young people make academic strides. The success of our programs can be measured by the achievements of our youth, as they head towards high school graduation with a solid plan for the future.
Brain Gain
Summer Brain Gain is six weeks of fun theme-based activities designed to mitigate summer learning loss for early elementary, upper elementary and middle school youth. Each Common Core aligned learning module provides engaging project-based activities, with an emphasis on math, literacy, and 21st century skills.
Stem Mentoring
STEM Mentoring brings together youth and mentors for fun, hands-on activities focused on a STEM curriculum including: First Lego League Jr., Endangered Animals, Renewable Energy, Math in Sports, Engineering Design and Water Conservation. Through STEM Mentoring members have hosted a First Lego League, Jr. Expo, virtually toured the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut, and visited the Maryland Science Center, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and Skate Zone!
Power Hour
Power Hour helps all Club members achieve academic success by providing homework help, tutoring and high-yield learning activities and encouraging members to become self-directed learners. Tutoring is provided by staff, volunteers, and peers. Each Club provides this intentional quiet time for study, usually as the first activity when the kids arrive after school. Power Hour runs Monday to Thursday throughout the school year.
Rooted in Reading
Rooted in Reading encourages BGCAA's youngest club members to engage with books by listening to stories and expanding their creativity through book-related activities. Staff read a selection of books picked by our Director of Education and read aloud the book, discuss key ideas, and engage members with questions that help them develop their critical thinking skills. Participants are encouraged to “popcorn” read in front of the group, where each child gets to read a page before choosing who will read the next page. This instills confidence toward reading aloud.
Career Launch
Career Launch, BGCA’s premier job-readiness and career-preparation programs offers a variety of activities to hone teens’ and tweens’ decision-making, problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities – important skills for workplace success. Youth get the chance to explore various careers based on their interests and talents, determine the corresponding educational path they need to pursue, and map out a plan for their future.
DIY Stem
DIY STEM is a hands-on, activity-based STEM program for ages 9-12 that uses everyday materials to explore and reinforce science concepts taught in the classroom like engineering design, chemistry, energy/electricity, and aeronautics. This program is designed to promote interest in and awareness of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and provide STEM-related learning opportunities for members of all learning abilities and skill sets.
My Future
The My.Future initiative transforms the way young people use technology in Clubs. Supported by Comcast, My.Future encourages youth to develop digital literacy and earn certifications, or digital badges, as they progress through the learning experiences. Starting with “Essentials,” My.Future provides Club youth with foundational technology skills, then advances to “Extensions” where youth could learn robotics, game design and even online journalism based on their interest pathways.
The Ultimate Journey
Ultimate Journey is a STEM program designed to engage youth in fun, experiential, environmental education activities. The program cultivates an awareness and appreciation of the natural wonders that surround young people. In partnership with the National Park Service, the curriculum introduces young people to aspects of environmental stewardship and provides distance learning opportunities.
Money Matters
Money Matters promotes financial responsibility and independence among Club members ages 13-18 by building their basic money management skills.
Diploma 2 Degrees
d2D is a targeted program in Boy & Girls Clubs of America’s education core program area that encourages teens to make connections between their interests and future career paths, plan and prepare to enter postsecondary education, and develop the social-emotional skills and attributes to be successful in their educational endeavors.
Project learn
Project Learn reinforces the academic enrichment and school engagement of young people during the time they spend at the Club.
Lyricism 101
Teens Utilizes proven youth development practices and creative activities that build and expand the literary skills of our teens, while exposing them to the art of hip-hop, particularly cypher culture. It is broken down into nine, 90-minute sessions, each of which can be delivered as a complete workshop or stand-alone lesson.
