Delta Academy

Delta Academy

The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy (Delta Academy) is a national initiative that supports girls age 11 - 14. The Delta Academy provides educational and enrichment activities to girls at a crucial time in their development. The program focuses on self-esteem, community service, educational achievement, leadership development, and physical and psychological well-being while preparing young girls for full participation as leaders in the 21st Century.

The Annapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has been leading this program at BGCAA for three years, watching our young Club members blossom into strong young ladies. On the 3rd Wednesday of each month, during the school year, members of the sorority met with Club members to address topics such as self esteem, decision making, body image, nutrition, behavior, goal-setting, and planning for their futures.

The theme of the Academy is "The Transformation of Me - Knowing Me, Developing Me, Preparing Me".

On Wednesday, May 18th, a graduation ceremony was held at BGCAA's Wiley H. Bates Clubhouse.  Many parents and supporters were in attendance. Each of the Delta Academy participants presented their vision boards and received a certificate of completion and a Dream Catcher. The Dream Catcher, from Native American culture, is believed to possess the power to capture bad dreams, entangling them in the catcher’s web, thus allowing only good dreams to pass through and into the person’s being. The Delta Academy is a dream catcher! It helps its members recognize, receive and plan for reaching their dreams.

The ceremony was followed by a reception.

Thank you to the Annapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for continuing to bring this program to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County. Thank you for helping us create paths to GREAT FUTURES for all of our members.
