STEM Mentoring

In December BGCAA brought 44 youth on a STEM Mentoring Field Trip to the National Aquarium in Baltimore. The trip was part of an Endangered Animals module through the Sea Research Foundation.  During the Fall members focused on a different endangered animal each week and learned about what makes it endangered or a fun fact about how it lives/survives. Participants in the STEM Mentoring Program then got to see the world from below the surface on a field trip to the National Aquarium in December.

First Lego League

Members of the Bates Club competed in the First Lego League Animal Allies Challenge.  The team designed a robot fish that would carry a GoPro to help spot pollution in the ocean. The team, self-named "King Squad" presented their project and 3D model to staff of the Annapolis Maritime Museum and discussed pollution and how it affects marine life.

For the second half of the competition, the team programmed a robot to run through an obstacle course. Using NXT software, teams have 2 1/2 minutes to complete as many challenges as possible. King Squad, in partnership with midshipmen from USNA, created two programs that completed three challenges. At the competition at South River High School on December 17th, judges awarded King Squad the “Judges Award” which recognizes a team for their outstanding enthusiasm, teamwork, and character.

Comcast Foundation Supports My.Future

Thanks to a donation from the Comcast Foundation, BGCAA will run the My.Future program to help transform the way young people use technology in Clubs. My.Future encourages youth to develop digital literacy and earn certifications, or digital badges, as they progress through learning experiences. My.Future provides Club youth with foundational technology skills, then advances to 'extensions' where youth could learn robotics, game design and even online journalism based on their interest. The Comcast Foundation was founded by Comcast Corporation in June 1999 to provide charitable support to qualified nonprofit organizations. BGCAA Performs at National YOY

The National Youth of the Year dinner is turning out to be one of our most favorite days of the year. More than 30 BGCAA Club members got to perform in the 2016 National YOY Celebration in Washington DC on September 27th. Club members got to perform in two numbers with lots of singing, dancing, clapping and of course huge smiles. They got their first glimpse of YOY on a national level and many are now polishing their applications so that they can represent BGCAA as a Youth of the Year.  Posted 10/1/16

Junior First Lego League and South River Power Hawks Robotics Showcase

BGCAA celebrated this semester's STEM Mentoring program with a Junior First Lego League showcase at the Bates Clubhouse. Participants in STEM Mentoring displayed their recycling projects and quizzed the South River High School's Power Hawks about their super cool robots - including one that actually retrieves and throws basketballs. Members also enjoyed games, refreshments, building with Legos, and driving the Power Hawks robots throughout the Games Room. Thank you to all of our STEM Mentors, Volunteers, and the Power Hawks for making the event so much fun.
